InterRail 2012 3. Amsterdam
I would have liked to have seen the Maeslant Barrier and the port of Rotterdam but there was not enough time. At 0015 my train pulled in at Amsterdam. I was pleased to see that even at this late hour, there were still many people outside the station. My friend Alex picked me up and I stayed over his flat, some 5 minutes away.
In the morning, we walked past bridges, the thing I really love about Amsterdam. I like the fact that there’s water and bridges everywhere. Then we had brunch at a bistro overlooking a canal. Thanks to Alex for the meal. It turned out I missed another big classical music festival in Amsterdam (missed it from my last year’s visit too), by about a day or two but we were lucky to find a youth orchestra concert playing Mahler and Tchaikovsky in the Main Square. After brunch, we made way back to the station and I made my sleeper train reservation for Berlin, which costed me €47!!!
Because my camera almost got pickpocketed in Brussels, I decided to buy a carry bag to put my camera so I can easily and securely pack it. Alex patiently took me to so many shops because I didn’t particularly like the style they had. Along the way, we stopped at a grocery so I can pick up some toiletries, underwear and socks all the while looking for THE right bag for me. I finally settled down with a bag (although I wasn’t very happy with it as it was a bit small) from a shop that was opposite North Face and Timberland store. While I was in the North Face shop, I found this yellow bag that I so wanted to buy. Had I not been carrying a backpack already and it not been €140, I’d have bagged it.
As I was going to Auschwitz when I reach Krakow later on this trip, I thought it would be a good primer to see the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. Unfortunately, because I had to catch the next train to Berlin early that evening (1901), I had to skip it for another time.
